I met Charlie Katrycz a few years ago, and he showed me a (really mind-blowing) method of creating a leaf-like structure, very similar to what you are looking at doing, but in his case it was in silicone molding. I had never seen a process like that before, and the branching structure happens 'magicorganically' - it was really dramatic: you don't predefine the exact structure.
